Redux
This series came about in part from practicality. I have a loft in my studio that stores a great many old paintings, many of which I was never quite satisfied with. I worked with pastels on raw wet canvas for many years. Recently I perceived that the canvases could provide a great backdrop for a new painting. Many of the stored works have substantial saturation of color and an Inuit theme of transformation, which seems felicitous.
It is very challenging to perceive a new work on top of an old one. It’s difficult to get started, but once I get to a certain stage lines and intersections of lines begin to delineate forms. The existing painting also sets the direction for the choice of palette. Even while taking a new concept and layering it over an existing canvas, I am trying to let some of the “spirit” from the original peak through.
